TikTok Account Enforcement System Update
TikTok is an entertainment platform where creativity, self-expression, and authenticity are key. To better support its creators, TikTok has updated its account enforcement system to promote a smoother and safer experience for everyone on the platform.
Community Guidelines
TikTok has established Community Guidelines to define the behavior and content that are not allowed on the platform. When these policies are violated, TikTok takes action to keep the platform safe. However, a small minority of users repeatedly violate the policies, causing a need for an updated enforcement system.
Why the Update
The current account enforcement system uses restrictions, such as temporary bans, to prevent abuse and educate users about the policies. While this approach has been effective in reducing harmful content, TikTok has heard from creators that it can be confusing and disproportionately impact those who violate policies unknowingly. Repeat offenders tend to follow patterns, making it easier to remove them with a more streamlined enforcement system.

How the New System Works
Under the new system, accounts that violate a Community Guideline will accrue a strike, leading to a permanent ban if the threshold is met within either a product feature or policy. The policy thresholds will vary based on the potential harm a violation could cause. Severe violations, such as promoting violence or showing child sexual abuse material, will result in a permanent ban on the first strike. Strikes will expire after 90 days.
Support for Creators
TikTok wants to increase transparency and help creators understand their account status. New features, such as an “Account status” page and a “Report records” page, will be added to the Safety Center to provide creators with more information. Creators will also be notified if they are close to having their account permanently removed.
Transparent Moderation Decisions
To further improve transparency, TikTok is testing a new feature that provides creators with information about which of their videos were marked as ineligible for the For You feed and why, with the option to appeal. The updated account enforcement system is currently rolling out globally and TikTok will notify all users as it becomes available.
